Lady Madeline Fordwich, who acted as political hostess for her distinguished Tory father, each season acquired a protégé to advance socially and politically in London. Her former suitor, Lord Eskott, though a Whig, had become a dear friend. But Escott did not at all approve of Maddie’s newest protégé, Henry Aldred, a relative with whom she appeared to be falling in love. Regency Romance by Joan Smith; originally published by Fawcett Crest

Lady Madeline Folly edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks

The book was very aptly named. Lady Madeline served as her father's hostess in London for political gatherings of major players in the English government. Occasionally, she would take on young men as protégées and help them obtain jobs in the government as aides, secretaries, etc. When her father's handsome young cousin, Henry Aldred, age 23, comes to town in order to try and find a position, Madeline, now at age 24, decides that he might be her next protégée and who knows - possibly a little more.

Along the way, Madeline's long time, true friend, Lord Eskott who has repeatedly asked Madeline to marry him, begins to question Madeline's relationship with Henry, Madeline doesn't appreciate it. In fact, if Madeline ever possessed any common sense, it departs as she pursues a relationship with the very unworthy Henry. Soon, Madeline gets her comeuppance but not until after she insults Lord Eskott and damages their friendship.

I love Joan Smith, but Madeline was not the type of heroine I love reading about.

good
Not one of my favorites at all by Joan Smith. Unless you have nothing left to read by her buy another novel.
This is the only Joan Smith book that I have read so far that I didn't like. I did not like any of the main characters. The heroine was a spoiled brat, the hero kept trying to trap the cousin out of jealousy, and the cousin was an opportunist of the worst kind. Although I would not have agreed with his politics, the father was the only character I liked.
I've become a Joan Smith fan. This author really researched the Regency period, and she has used political events of the time to power the plot of Lady Madeline's romance. Lady Madeline, the single daughter of a prominent Tory, takes a young man (or two) under her wing each season, teaching him how to dress and who to cultivate to further his career. This year her protege is her own cousin. He's less cooperative than some other young men she has assisted, but she finds herself falling in love with him. Then unexpected political events turn her romance upside down. Happiness looks completely out of reach until, once again, political events bring her a happy ending.
The witty conversation Joan Smith excels at isn't much in evidence here, but we do have a sympathetic heroine and a hero who appreciates her.
